Reitan Eiendom is considered a leading player in sustainable real estate. As one of our earliest customers, they have played a crucial role in contributing to the development of our tools.

In the fall of 2022, during the early days of our company, when our product was in its rawest form of early prototyping, CEO Gustav Haaland reached out to the Head of Sustainability at Reitan Eiendom, Jostein Breines:

"I think Gustav called me while I was in the car on my way home from the cabin, enthusiastically asking if I was interested in his product, which could automate EU taxonomy assessments for the entire portfolio. At this point, we had worked a lot with the topic, and I was like, "yeah, right.” This had to be either fake or a billion dollar idea."

After a few meetings that fall, Jostein nudged Gustav and his team to narrow their focus and start with physical climate risks at the asset level, with the ability to extract information to the portfolio level. This would provide Reitan Eiendom with bottom-up information about the risks in their portfolio, which they could use to unleash several strategic superpowers.

Our team had a feeling these insights would lead to something big, so we went back to the drawing board. The idea did not disappear for Reitan Eiendom either, as they published their sustainability report for 2022 in April 2023, with the following statements:

162 properties have been screened manually with specific questions related to the EU Taxonomy, climate risk, and biodiversity risk.

Automating this process could provide the company with continuous insight into the portfolio's status, measured against the technical requirements of the taxonomy. Particularly, the extraction of map data and statistics from publicly available sources can be automated.

Reitan Eiendom hopes that such a technical solution will enable efficient and swift extraction of this type of information for reports in the coming years, as well as for ESG due diligence needs for selected properties.

Finally, in the fall of 2023, the product reached a stage where it met some of Reitan Eiendom's requirements. Except Reitan Eiendom where also particularly interested in including biodiversity information, in time for their sustainability reporting sprint for 2023. Telescope took on the challenge, and the parties entered into a collaboration. The sustainability team at Reitan Eiendom was onboarded in time for their yearly reporting, resulting in significantly better risk management across Reitan Eiendom’s portfolio.

Today, the parties continue to collaborate on further development of our tools through feedback sessions, user tests, and sparring sessions.

Developing the most practical tools for this industry would be an impossible task without the expertise we’ve gained from Jostein and the team in Reitan Eiendom.
